The Perfect Party

February 18, 2010

Everyone dreams about the perfect party. But the perfect party doesn’t have to include a DJ, yummy snack foods, and hundred people dancing to music. Here are some ideas that would be great for a birthday party that aren’t expensive and really fun to do:

~*Harry Potter Party*~
-invitations: model it after the letter to Hogwarts that Harry got.
-clothes: pajamas, any HP clothes owned
-what you’d do: have a HP marathon with ALL SIX movies!

~*The girliest, cheesiest sleepover EVER!*~
-invitiations: on pink paper, in swirly handwriting.
-clothes: anything pink or purple!
-what you’d do: mani-pedi’s, pillow fights, facials, anything as girlie as possible. It sounds weird, but its so much fun!

~*Disney Themed!*~
-invitations: add disney princess to the invites!
-clothes: dress up like your favorite princess (i know, sounds geeky. but its a chance to act like a little kid again…so much fun!)
-what you’d do: marathon of disney princess movies….you’ll have quite a few laughs(:

~*The MLIA sleepover*~
-invitations: modeled after the MLIA website…in MLIA format.
-clothes: whatever you want
-What you’d do: water-gun fights and read MLIA stories. You’ll also have tons of laughs with this.

I hope these idea’s are helpful when planning your next sleepover party.  I just recently did the Girliest Sleepover and Harry Potter sleepover and it was so much fun!

10 Fun Things to Do Over Winter Break

December 17, 2009

If you’re not headed out on a vacation for winter break, you might think of trying these fun ideas with your friends!

1.  Have a DIY Party with Your Friends:  Grab paint pens, tshirts, boxers, pillowcases, sweatshirts, or your favorite clothing and design your own fun tees!

2. Create Your Own Winter Wonderland.  Make hot cocoa or bake your favorite cookies and then watch your favorite movies together!

3. Practice Random Acts of Kindness.  Think about how you can surprise someone with an act of kindness. Maybe you buy the next person in line their lunch or you shovel your neighbors driveway.  Get creative and let us know what you do!

4. Support our charity of the month, go to http://www.letssaythanks.com and send a FREE card to our troops!

5.  Create a Photo Collage.  Take fun pics of you and your friends and create your own collage or memory book.

6.  Pretend Your a Tourist in Your Hometown.  Is there a place you’ve always wanted to check out and haven’t visited yet?

7.  Give Yourself a Few Big Dreams!  Take 30 minutes to write or think about your biggest dreams.  Is there something you’ve always wanted to do, but keep making excuses for?  Pick one thing on your list and sign up to do it in 2010!

8. Create Your Own Spa!  Whether you’re alone or you have a few friends join you, do your nails, give yourself a pedicure, and maybe try a mud mask on your face!  If you think you don’t have the supplies at home, look at our DIY tips on how easy!

9.  Movie Marathon with a Twist!  Create your own movie marathon with your friends (and don’t forget the popcorn)!  Either pick a theme for the night and have everyone bring a movie that goes with that theme, or ask each friend to bring their all time favorite movie and then at the end of the night vote on the group’s favorite!

10. Pick One Day to Recharge and Relax!  If you’re break is feeling really crazy and busy from travel, visiting others, work, or other things, try to find one day that is just for you where you can relax, sleep, or do anything else that makes you smile!

Dealing with Friends Who Are Drinking and Doing Drugs

October 2, 2009

What do you do when one of your close friends starts smoking weed, doing drugs or starts drinking? How should you handle it? Do you stage an intervention or do you ignore and continue to let them ruin their life?

Answer from the Girls With Dreams team:

This is a tough question and it’s a problem for a lot of people. I know so many people who have gone down the wrong path because of drugs and drinking. It’s a sad thing. If one of your close friends is doing drugs or drinking, the only thing you can really do is talk to them. Ask them to go to a coffee shop or the mall with you and tell them how you feel. Make sure they know you’re telling them you wish they wouldn’t do drugs because you care about them. If starting the conversation is too hard to do in person, organize your thoughts in a letter or a send them a text. Remember these tips:

  1. Use “I” messages. Using phrases such as “I feel…” or “I don’t think this is best” rather than “You need…” or “You should…” removes the blame from them. You want them to know you’re trying to help while not losing them as a friend.
  2. Don’t be their mom. Although you’re trying to help them, you might push them away. Say things such as “As a friend, I care about you” instead of trying to tell them what to do.
  3. Think of other activities for you and your friend. They might think there is nothing better than doing drugs, but try to show your friend how you can have fun by doing other things. Invite the girls over for a slumber party or go to a movie.

Never stop yourself from doing something because you’re afraid of what people think. Be your own person and help your friend out. That’s what friends are for. True friends are there through thick and thin, through bad time and good times. One day your peers will realize how strong of a person you are for speaking up. And although your friend might get upset with you, she will thank you in the end for caring.

Finally, here’s a few questions to think about:

  1. What will you lose by talking to your friend?
  2. What will happen if you don’t talk to your friend?
  3. If you were in your friend’s position, wouldn’t you want someone to talk to you?

Remember, If you have a question for our team, email us at info@girlswithdreams.com and put ADVICE in the subject line. Look for more great advice from our teens on Girls With Dreams TV and in Carrie’s new book, Secrets Girls Keep.

Spending Spring Break at Home

April 11, 2009

lisaIf you’re not headed out to have some fun in the sun, there’s still plenty to do in your hometown. I talked to a lot of girls who stayed home this year and they still had a great time. Here’s a few ideas girls shared for spring break.

  • Get caught up on sleep. You could even pamper yourself by spritzing your sheets with a scented spray or listening to a relaxing CD to soothe you to sleep.
  • Hang out with the friends you haven’t seen in awhile because you’ve been too busy with school.
  • Have a major movie marathon, with food and decorations related to the theme of the movies.
  • Enjoy the outdoors! Go for a walk, bike, or rollerblade.
  • Be a tourist in your own town. Check out sites you don’t normally visit. If you live in St. Louis, for example, head to the City Museum, the Arch, or the Zoo.
  • Grab dinner with a group of friends or throw a potluck party at one of your houses. Have everyone bring a beverage, appetizer, main course, side dish or desert.
  • Pick up a few more shifts at work to save up for something special.
  • Go bowling. Better yet, organize your own mini-tournament with your friends. The losing team buys pizza for the group afterwards.

What about you? If you stayed home this year, tell us what you did!
