Have You Read the Body Scoop For Girls?

February 19, 2010

The Body Scoop for Girls: A Straight-Talk Guide to a Healthy, Beautiful YouThis is a teen book review of Dr. Jennifer Ashton’s The Body Scoop for Girls:   A Straight-Talk Guide to a Healthy, Beautiful You by Stevie.  I would recommend the book The Body Scoop for Girls by Dr. Jennifer Ashton because I think it has many good things you can learn from it. Pretty much any age could learn something new but I would definitely recommend it for teen girls ages 10-18 because around age ten is when our body is changing and we aren’t sure what’s going on and in this book a lot of the changes are being talked about and you can read about what is normal and what’s not so normal. I think even an 18 year old could get a lot out of it.  I’m 17 and I learned plenty of things that I have always wondered about myself.

Body Scoop for Girls covers the majority of things that teen’s have to deal with like drugs, sex, alcohol, boys, puberty, stress and eating disorders. My favorite chapter from the Body Scoop for Girls was chapter three about periods because I think that’s the one I learned the most from. Especially since I don’t have a mom to ask those kinds of questions to and my dad would have no idea what I was talking about.

Body Scoop for Girls helped me answer one of my questions I have always wanted answered. I like this book because it was easy read and if you have a problem with something you can just go straight to that chapter. I think it will help a lot of other girls because when you go to high school and middle school you hear so many rumors about things and you never know what you believe. In this book, teen’s get real information and will know not to believe everything they hear.   Peers will tell you anything to get you to smoke, drink, have sex and this book lets you know you’re not alone and that there are a lot of consequences that come from doing those kinds of things.

Its a great book for girls who don’t talk to their mom, who don’t like to talk about this stuff, or who don’t have anyone to talk to. I think girls can be embarrassed about some stuff and sometimes just simply reading about it and knowing you’re not alone make things better.

I think the author did a good job and giving examples of girls she has talked with and not being like a mom and more of  “here is what is best, you don’t have to do what I say but this is what I think you should do” It’s not a book all about telling, it’s more about advising. It’s not only a book teens can read, but adults can read it too, I’m sure they can learn something from it, plus they can see exactly what teens are going through.   You can get Body Scoop in bookstores, or order it from Amazon today!

We’re also going to be having a contest and giving away one copy of Body Scoop for Girls!  Check our home page for more details soon!!!

The Perfect Party

February 18, 2010

Everyone dreams about the perfect party. But the perfect party doesn’t have to include a DJ, yummy snack foods, and hundred people dancing to music. Here are some ideas that would be great for a birthday party that aren’t expensive and really fun to do:

~*Harry Potter Party*~
-invitations: model it after the letter to Hogwarts that Harry got.
-clothes: pajamas, any HP clothes owned
-what you’d do: have a HP marathon with ALL SIX movies!

~*The girliest, cheesiest sleepover EVER!*~
-invitiations: on pink paper, in swirly handwriting.
-clothes: anything pink or purple!
-what you’d do: mani-pedi’s, pillow fights, facials, anything as girlie as possible. It sounds weird, but its so much fun!

~*Disney Themed!*~
-invitations: add disney princess to the invites!
-clothes: dress up like your favorite princess (i know, sounds geeky. but its a chance to act like a little kid again…so much fun!)
-what you’d do: marathon of disney princess movies….you’ll have quite a few laughs(:

~*The MLIA sleepover*~
-invitations: modeled after the MLIA website…in MLIA format.
-clothes: whatever you want
-What you’d do: water-gun fights and read MLIA stories. You’ll also have tons of laughs with this.

I hope these idea’s are helpful when planning your next sleepover party.  I just recently did the Girliest Sleepover and Harry Potter sleepover and it was so much fun!

Want to Help Other Girls?

February 18, 2010

How long has your last prom dress been sitting in your closet?  Have you ever thought about donating the dresses you don’t use anymore?  You can help girls who can’t afford a new dress!

All you need to do is to click here to find out where you can donate a dress!

Most of the time we only wear a dress once or twice anyways, so why not give it to someone who could really use it?

Movie Review-Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

February 17, 2010

Somehow my Dad was able to get our school a private, advance screening of The Lightning Thief.  If I were to give it a grade, I would give it a B- because, first of all, it was nothing like the book by Rick Riordan.  Half of the book wasn’t even in the movie which made it less interesting and less funny. Also, the actors performed it way over the top, and it was so continuously loud that it hurt my ears. However, I thought the special effects were really cool and overly dramatic as the actors were, most of them still did a good job conveying the characters. Percy was not convincing at all but the other main characters were pretty good.  Also, you could easily follow along with the plot line.

Over all it was OK but I wouldn’t see it again.  I think if I hadn’t read the book and had such high standards for it, (because the book was really good) the movie might have seemed better.

If you see it, I’d like to know what you think.  Let me know if you read the book before you saw the movie.

Stevie’s Tips on Finding Good Music

February 17, 2010

I know music is always fun to have going when your working and it keeps you concentrating. Here are some websites you can go to, to listen to the music you want.

A good website for my area is http://www.soundstl.com/main.html you can listen to it too, it just plays what the radio is playing and it’s all good music.

You can go to pandora.com, you can just pick a song you like and it will play other songs like that one.

Last.fm— you can pick a song you like and play it, it’s kind of like youtube.com except without video’s to go with it.

Hopefully those will help you out when you’re trying to find something to listen to!

How to Not Crack Under Peer Pressure

February 10, 2010

I’m sure there’s going to be a time when someone wants you to do something you don’t want to, here are some suggestions on how to avoid it.  Whether it’s at school, with friends, or maybe even at prom

1. Don’t hang out with people who are going to make you do things you don’t want to, but if you do, at least have another friend there that you know will always have your back.

2. If they ask you to do something in advance tell them you will think about it, or you might already have plans so you will have to check, that way you’re not locking yourself into anything.

3. Let them know whats up. You can say something like “hey sorry but that’s not my thing”.

4. Make suggestions to do something else.

5. Come up with some kind of  “code” with your parents, so if you are in some uncomfortable position they can call you or you can call them and say you have to go home.

6.  Watch the advice video we made about how to deal with peer pressure at prom.

Hopefully you are never in a position you don’t want to be, but if you are be prepared to know how to handle it.

Annie’s Thoughts on Problems With Friends

February 5, 2010

Hi, I’m Annie and I’m a new blogger.  I enjoy writing and when I heard Girls With Dreams was looking for girls to blog I was very excited. I mostly want to blog about things that might happen in the avearage girl’s social life.

Like, just the other day, a funny thing happened at lunch. A girl I know was saying very rude, (but kind of funny) things about other people. This girl is usually a very nice person so naturally I was confused.

But then later, at recess, while I was jumping rope with my friends, the girl came up to us and said that she was really sorry for saying rude things and that she didn’t mean them and she was just trying to cheer up her friend who had been feeling a little bit down lately. So you see, not everything is always what it seems. Before you  jump to conclusions, make sure you check that what you heard is what you think it is.
