Back to School Blitz: Dating Tips for Middle School

August 6, 2010

Everyone starts dating at a certain age, some don’t want a boyfriend till they are 16 or 18 and some try to find a guy at 12. Everyone is different so if you are in the 8th grade and have never had a boyfriend… THAT IS OK! There is nothing wrong with that. I think girls all the time make it seem like it’s bad but it’s not, it’s totally fine.

Most important, stay true to yourself.  Too many girls who don’t have a boyfriend try to be someone they are not by trying to be the girl that they think boys will like.  This helps no one.  If you can surround yourself with good friends and stay involved with activities that make you feel good, you’ll eventually find the right guy!

Find whatever you are comfortable with and go from there, just don’t do something because everyone else is.

Back to School Blitz: Take the Role!

August 5, 2010

Back to school: clubs, sports, academics. Where to start and where to end? Sometimes you have to pick and choose which activities are worth it in your schedule. You can’t take on everything you’ve offered… It’ll be too much stress. You shouldn’t necessary join every club you can.

It might be better to join a few clubs you really like (or might be interested in) and focus on getting further in those.

I strongly encourage everybody to go for a big role. Don’t be afraid to run for president of a club or try to be captain of a sports team.

Taking on big roles gives you experience. It gives you confidence, and people are always impressed to hear what you’ve done so far in your life. It’s great to put on a resume or mention in an interview for a job.

One thing I did this year was run for an officer position in a club at school, DECA. Three people were chosen to be officers, and I expected to share the workload with my fellow officers. Things came up, and some officers graduated earlier. The position of president kind of got thrown on me, unexpectedly. I didn’t ask for it nor want it, but I learned to lead people and organize events. Most of all, I gained experience doing something.

Experience will get you anywhere. Sometimes you’re going to be scared, but you have to step up. It’s worth it in the end. You can get all sorts of scholarships for leadership.

Take the role!

Are You Going to Get Involved This Year?

August 5, 2010

With the school year starting a lot of us might be joining new clubs or just trying something new out. You could be starting a club for your school that you created or be joining Student Council. Either way a lot of us are finding something we are interested in and joining so we can be involved in our school.

Don’t just take a small role to become involved, step up to the plate and take on a bigger role that will challenge you. My junior year of high school I wanted to be an editor on my school magazine, well I was really nervous that I would be bad at it. It ended up being one of the best choices I have ever made. By senior year I was debating  about going for Editor-In-Chief, well I did and loved it.

We all lack self confidence sometimes and think we won’t be able to handle something but really we never give it a shot. If we keep being too afraid to do something out of our comfort zone we will never succeed to our best. Now don’t go out and become the leading role of every club and become really stressed, but this school year take on something big. Whether you decide to be a leader in Student Council, a  Class Officer, or you start your own club, you can make a difference in your school.

Back to School Blitz: Where to Go to Get Involved

August 5, 2010

There are so many places to get involved so you can meet new friends and help yourself feel good.

– Look at your school! Find clubs that you are interested in and see what they are doing, just because you go to a meeting doesn’t mean you have to commit. First see if it is something you are interested in.

– Look online!  Go to http://www.dosomething.org they have way you can volunteer and they have stories of what other kids do with their time.

– Get involved with a community group.  Find a local church or synagogue, volunteer at a food pantry, or join a youth group.

– Create your own club! If you have a desire for something then start your own club! Maybe someone else likes it as much as you and can’t find a way to get involved either.

– Help Girls With Dreams! We have stuff you can do from home and you can be helping other girls out there!  Just send us an email at info@girlswithdreams.com to find out more!

Back to School Tips: How To Use a Planner to Stay Organized

August 4, 2010

Staying organized is very important especially with the scho0l year starting up. Obviously each of us has our own amount of work load since many of us are different ages. But it all boils down to one thing,to stay sane during the school year, you’re going to need some sort of organization skill. Ever since middle school I have used a planner, it really helps me remember things and stay sane.

Most might just think this is for you to write your homework down but that is where you are wrong. I use mine almost as much as I use a computer or my phone. I keep track of homework, my work schedule, meetings, doctor appointments and anything else that comes up. I also write down little things I need to do (such as the dishes and vacuum) to keep from getting in trouble from my parents. I highly suggest you use a planner and if you choose to do so, make sure to keep up on it every day and look at it.

I promise it will help you stay sane and keep from saying the words in your head, “I forgot to do __.” When you are picking up your school supplies grab yourself a cute planner too.

Back-to-School Shopping on a Tight Budget

August 4, 2010

Between clothes, school supplies, and the holidays just around the corner, that shopping bill adds up pretty fast. Even if you’re parents are paying for everything, it’s still nice to keep an eye on the price tags when you’re getting all your gear. The two major things you’re probably looking for right now are clothes and school supplies. Here are some tips for saving cash on both:

Clothes Shopping:

  • Stay away from brand name stuff. You can get less expensive clothes that are just as cute as brand name styles by giving up that little logo.
  • Head to the clearance racks! You can find a hidden treasure that no one else will be wearing at school.
  • Look for coupons. You can find them online, in magazines and newspapers, and even by the register.
  • Don’t buy things you already own. Go for something completely different to add variety to your wardrobe.
  • Don’t be afraid of resale stores! Goodwill has turned into one of my favorite stores! It’s like one giant store of clearance racks! You can even sell your gently worn clothes at Plato’s Closet, then shop around to find new items.

School Supplies Shopping:

  • Buy in bulk. I know we all want the sparkly pens and pencils, but you’ll just lose those anyway (well, I always did). It’s cheaper to get a whole box.
  • Shop Dollar Stores. Saving a few bucks on each item might not seem like it makes a big difference, but it adds up.
  • Compare prices online first. Amazon has a lot of great deals.
  • If you have some supplies from last year that are still in good condition, then use them! There’s no point in throwing them aside and buying replacements.

Back to School Blitz: How to Stay Organized with Google

August 4, 2010

Meetings, classes, sports practice, exams… We all know that when the school year comes around, everyone’s schedule gets twice as busy. You might be struggling to keep up with your school work, but staying organized will ensure that you do well.

Using a planner, calendars, and post-its are a great way to keep things straight. My school days get packed: meeting in the morning, hard classes, meeting after school, then work. The easiest way for me to stay organized is to use google docs!

If you have a gmail account, you can use Google Docs as a word processor. You can write your essays in program (which is built into your e-mail), edit it right there, and attach it to send in an e-mail to your teacher/friend/etc.

You can insert tables & presentations (like powerpoint).

You can create forms like excel. Google Docs gives you the opportunity to draw, write, and organize them into your own personal folders.

Check it out for a way to make your life simpler and more organized.
