Have You Heard of Girl Talk?

October 27, 2009

Recently, I was fortunate to meet the founder of Girl Talk, Haley Kilpatrick.  I was totally inspired by how Haley’s dream is now helping thousands of girls!  At only the age of 15, in 2002, Haley started Girl Talk.  She believed that if girls’ emotional needs where addressed, they would excel academically.

Girl Talk is a student-to-student mentoring program that pairs middle school girls with high school girls who serve as mentors. Weekly meetings are held before or after school, during which the high school “Leader” conducts valuable lessons that address issues middle school girls face every day.

Today, Girl Talk is one of the fastest growing nonprofit mentoring programs in the country. It has reached more than 30,000 girls in 36 states. Currently, Haley is working hard to ensure that Girl Talk has a Chapter in all 50 states by 2010.

If you want to bring a chapter to your school, visit the Girl Talk website to find out how!

Feel Great About Your Body on a Date

October 26, 2009

katebronsonIt’s time to slip into that dress for Homecoming, Prom, a date, or some other formal. Why are we girls always so self-conscious about how the right or wrong dress makes us look? Have you ever noticed how hard it is to just be happy with ourselves for a minute? It seems like we take one look in the mirror and always find a flaw or something to complain about.

Our teen advisors think you’re beautiful! Use these tips to feel more confident when you’re on a date.

Advice for Teens Whose Parents are Divorcing

October 24, 2009

My parents just told me they’re splitting up after 17 years of marriage. Is it gonna be hard?

Answer from the Girls With Dreams team:

Yes, it’s going to be hard. I have never personally gone through that, but I know from what I hear that it will be. I watched one of my good friends go through it. My advice is to not let it ruin you. By that, I mean don’t let it bring you down. I watched my friend go down so many bad paths. She cried all the time and she let it ruin her life even though it wasn’t her fault. Your parents love you whether they are together or not, and that is all that matters. Keep your head held high and be positive. Talk to a friend that has already been through it. I’ll work on uploading a video about this, but don’t dwell on it in the meantime. Many kids go through this and you just have to know that in the end, everything happens for a reason.

Remember, If you have a question for our team, email us at info@girlswithdreams.com and put ADVICE in the subject line. Look for more great advice from our teens on Girls With Dreams TV and in Carrie’s new book, Secrets Girls Keep.

Amazing Teen Interview with Taylor Swift

October 23, 2009

Whether you are a Taylor Swift fan or not, you won’t want to miss an amazing interview Jordan did for the Oprah Show. Through her interview with Jordan as well as other pieces they shared, I loved so many points Taylor Swift shared. Here are a few you might like.

  • Taylor talked about how she doesn’t need a boyfriend. When she is dating someone, she wants to be totally into him.
  • Taylor dealt with being left out when she was around 10 or 11. She talked about not knowing if kids at her school would talk to her.
  • Oprah said she thinks it’s really cool when people can think a dream and then have that dream come true. She talked to Taylor about her dreams of singing and how she’s made it. Watch Taylor talk to Jordan on Oprah to find out more!

Tip 3 From Carrie: Who You Hang With Matters

October 22, 2009

You’ve heard the expression, you are what you eat, well the same expression applies to who you hang out with!  Who are the 5 people you spend the most time with?  Do they build you up or pull you down?  If they build you up, great.  It sounds like you’ve got great friends.  If they are pulling you down, you might want to take another look at your friends.

You can hear me talk more about friends on Girls With Dreams TV.

Can you Stop the Fat Talk?

October 21, 2009

Did you know that this week (Oct 19-23) is Fat Talk Free Week? This international, 5-day body activism campaign draws attention to body image issues and the damaging impact of the thin ideal on women in society. This annual public awareness effort was born from Tri Delta’s award-winning body image education and eating disorders prevention program, Reflections: Body Image Program™.

Here are a few statistics from the End Fat Talk Campaign website:

  • 81% of 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat. 51% of 9- and 10 -year-old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet. (Mellin LM, Irwin CE & Scully S, 1992)
  • Barbie, the best selling fashion doll in the world, has unattainable and unhealthy body proportions. If she were alive, her waist would be smaller than patients with anorexia nervosa, and she would be unable to menstruate. Research shows that young girls (ages 5-7) who are exposed to Barbie want a thinner body than they have. (Dittmar, Halliwell, & Ive, 2006)

If you’re ready to join thousands of other teens and women who want to stop the fat talk, you can sign the End Fat Talk Promise! I signed it and I hope you will too! What a great reason to start banning negative thoughts from your self-image! Forget thoughts such as, “I need to lose ten pounds,” “I’m so fat,” or “I’ll never look like her…” What would our world be like if we could eliminate fat talk?

Stevie Recommends Having Alone Time

October 21, 2009

There is so much going on in this world and we go through life never taking a minute to spend time with ourselves.

As girls, we are important and if we get to busy and can’t take a minute to step back and give ourselves alone time then we shouldn’t be doing anything else.

Go take a walk, or hang out in your room…Just you and yourself. Put away your phone, turn off the television, and log out of facebook [Or girls with dreams :)]

Taking time out for yourself shows you care about yourself and you have self control. Try doing it on a daily basis. It doesn’t have to be for hours unless you want it to be, maybe just ten minutes of your night.  I think you’ll be surprised at the results when you can start to find small windows of quiet time.
