What We Can Learn from Sandra Bullock

March 10, 2010

Sunday Night, Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for Best Actress in her role in The Blind Side.  I was very moved by her gracious acceptance speech and wanted to share why.

Sandra took time to acknowledge each of the 4 other women who had also been nominated.  In an interview she later had with Oprah Winfrey I was again impressed with her focus on collaboration instead of competition with these women.  She shared how difficult it had been because the media had naturally tried to pit them up against each other. Also, she took time to acknowledge her mother and all she has learned from her.

Here’s why it’s so important:

Girls fall into the trap all the time that we have to pull each other down to succeed.   This is not true!  I love that Sandra is showing us a better way of doing things and that we truly can collaborate and celebrate in the success of one another!

Too often we forget to acknowlege our moms, or other important women in our lives who have mentored us and showed us the way.

I also need to mention a history making event that happened on Oscar night Sunday.  For the first time, a woman won the award for Best Director.  Thank you to Kathryn Bigelow for showing all of us anything is possible and making that dream a reality for many aspiring young female directors!
