How to Deal With Tragedy and Loss

July 30, 2010

This was a difficult week for the teen staff and advisors at Girls With Dreams.com. Many of us lost a few people close to them. If you have experienced the loss of a good friend or family member, you know it can be difficult. Here are a few tips and ideas for how to cope.
Realize everyone grieves differently. Some people need to be by themselves, some people cry, some people talk, some people don’t talk.
Surround yourself with support. Even if you typically deal with things by yourself, it’s important not to isolate yourself all of the time. Make sure you surround yourself with people who lift you up. Some of your friends may not know what to say, but they’ll be there to listen.
Don’t be afraid to get counseling. Counseling is an important step in coping. Your school counselor can provide a list of referrals if you’re not sure where to start. If you’re family doesn’t have insurance, some services will provide help at a reduced rate. Some hospitals and community service agencies have free groups as well. Get a friend to go with you if it’s hard to take the first step.

Seven-Year-Old Makes Effort to Help with Gulf Disaster

July 29, 2010

imag0552Girls With Dreams wanted to let you know about a seven-year-old from St. Louis who is doing his part to help the Gulf. His efforts have inspired us and we hope it will inspire you!

This past spring, Dylan was upset about the oil disaster in the Gulf. He was telling a friend at school about it and his teacher asked them what they were talking about. As a result, his class investigated the disaster and collected hair to help soak up the oil. In May, Dylan created www.onestartsmany.com to continue to support the Gulf and the oceans.

Since he started the site, he discovered Whatever It Takes (WITKids), an organization that supports kids with ideas to help the world and was named as the Kid of the Month for July. Dylan will be visiting the Gulf and WITKids is sending him a flip camera and plan to post his interviews from the Gulf on their site. WitKids is an amazing organization that has helped so many kids make a difference in the world.

Dylan’s trip to New Orleans and the Gulf will help him to report from a kid’s perspective and share how we can all help more. You can track Dylan’s blog at www.onestartsmany.com and watch his video from the Gulf at www.witkids.org in late August. So far, he’s hoping to talk with the Audubon Aquarium, business owners, kids, and maybe even the mayor of New Orleans.

Support Dylan and his project! Here are a few ways to help:

Buy a Wristband! Dylan is selling One Starts Many wristbands to help pay for his trip. So far Dylan has sold 68 bands and only has to sell 182 more to reach his goal! Just email Dylan at onestartsmany@gmail.com with how many wristbands you would like o order and and One Starts Many will send you an invoice via PayPal. Wristbands are only $3.00 each or 4 for $10.00, plus $1.00 for shipping and handling.

Spread the Word! Tell friends about Dylan’s mission, visit www.onestartsmany.com and make a comment, follow Dylan’s efforts on Twitter, or join the One Starts Many fan page on facebook.
